  • Some random resort we stopped at for a break.
  • We didn't stay here but just stopped for a break during one of the many long cross-country drives in public vans. Costa Rica is the only trip we didn't rent a car, because i was afraid of the roads. In 1993 when i first visited Costa Rica, roads were crazy and so was the driving. Not sure what changed, me or the roads, but by 2004 they seemed fine. I think renting a car would not be a problem. Stuck in the public vans more than 5 hours at a time was a problem. So we're enjoying a much needed break.

  • Spent alot of time in this room in Arenal; this is where the food poisoning hit ---- actually,, a few miles up the trail hiking to Arenal volcano. We missed our cab. I eventually got back to hotel hitching ride on back of an old pickup, squeezed between a dog, a refrigerator, and a bunch of locals. I had only one thought: "do not throw up during the ride". Felt for sure death was near for the next 18 hours but amazingly I woke up the next morning ready to fly out the door for our all-day boat lake-crossing, mountain road, etc to our next destination: Monteverde
